Leopold Classic Library is delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive collection. As part of our on-going commitment to delivering value to the reader, we have also provided you with a link to a website, where you may download a digital version of this work for free. Many of the books in our collection have been out of print for decades, and therefore have not been accessible to the general public. Whilst the books in this collection have not been hand curated, an aim of our publishing program is to facilitate rapid access to this vast reservoir of literature. As a result of this book being first published many decades ago, it may have occasional imperfections. These imperfections may include poor picture quality, blurred or missing text. While some of these imperfections may have appeared in the original work, others may have resulted from the scanning process that has been applied. However, our view is that this is a significant literary work, which deserves to be brought back into print after many decades. While some publishers have applied optical character recognition (OCR), this approach has its own drawbacks, which include formatting errors, misspelt words, or the presence of inappropriate characters. Our philosophy has been guided by a desire to provide the reader with an experience that is as close as possible to ownership of the original work. We hope that you will enjoy this wonderful classic book, and that the occasional imperfection that it might contain will not detract from the experience.

( Seamus MacManus’ The Story of the Irish Race is a classi...)
Seamus MacManus’ The Story of the Irish Race is a classic history of the Irish people from their prehistoric origins to their fight for independence in twentieth century. It provides fascinating insight into the origins of their culture, religion, laws, arts, antiquities, folklore, trade, literature, heroes, and more. MacManus sketches brilliant overviews of a number of the most famous figures from the country’s past, some of whom, like St. Patrick, allowed the Irish to flourish, whilst others, like Oliver Cromwell, persecuted them. But MacManus also uncovers some of the less well known men and women of Irish history, such as the legendary Conor MacNessa and the revolutionary Theobald Wolfe Tone, all of whom were instrumental in shaping that nation. From the Viking invasions to the Easter Rising to the Irish Famine, all of the major events of Irish history are covered in compelling detail. The Journal of Modern History stated that this book would “appeal to many patriotic Irish readers”. Drawing upon the rich cultural heritage of Ireland, Macmanus creates an extremely readable and enlightening account of this nation’s history. Seamus MacManus was an Irish author, dramatist, and poet known for his ability to reinterpret Irish folktales for modern audiences. He was considered by many to be the last great seanchaí (storyteller of the ancient oral tradition). The Story of the Irish Race is perhaps his greatest work and was first published in 1921. He died in 1960.

(This book was originally published prior to 1923, and rep...)
This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.

Everyone knows that St Patrick drove the snakes from the Irish soil, that Dean Swift's "A Modest Proposal," on the sufferings of the Irish people in the age of Queen Anne, is one of the masterpieces of satire on governmental stupidity and cruelty, that the Irish are a great race of fighters and poets and singers and saints, that Tristan's Isolde came from Ireland, that Deirdre of the Sorrows was a great legendary beauty and heroine, that somewhere along the line there were Irish heroes named Finn McCool, Cuchullain, Brian Boru, and Wolfe Tone, and that from time immemorial the Irish and English have been at loggerheads and still are. But the average well-read American knows little more of the great history of the Irish people -- a history too important to ignore, and a chronicle too fascinating to miss.
