Candidate for President of the United States on Communist ticket, 1936, 1940. As result of opposition to entrance of the United States in World War I, was sentenced and imprisoned in Leavenworth, 1919-1920 (full pardon 1933). Sentenced to prison for 4 years for passport irregularity, 1940 (sentence commuted by President Roosevelt after 14 months in Atlanta prison).
