Director Curtiss Aeroplane & Motor Corporation, Curtiss Flying Service. Early began experts. with motor vehicles, establishing motorcycle factory at Hammondsport, 1902. Set speed records for motorcycle, riding his own machines, 1905. At Ormond Beach, Florida, 1907, made a record for mile of 46 2/5 seconds with the 110-pound motorcycle.
Designed aeronautical motors for dirigibles with Captain T. S. Baldwin, 1907-1909, building for United States of America, Dirigible Northern 1. Director of experiments for Aerial Experiment Association, 1907-1909, and supervised construction of and piloted “June Bug,” July 4, 1908, for the first public flight of mile in the United States, winning Scientific American trophy. Experimented with the “Loon,” an airplane fitted with pontoons, 1908.
Won Gordon Bennett cup and Prix de la Vitesse at Rheims, France, International Aviation Meet as representative Aero Club America, August 1909, with airplane and motor of Curtiss design. Won New York World prize of $10,000 in flight from Albany to New York in 2 hours, 51 minutes, May 29, 1910. Made public demonstration of hydro-airplane, January 1911, with which had been experimenting for a number of years, following demonstration of this invention with that of the flying boat (awarded prize by Aero Club America, 1912).
Established flying schools at Hammondsport, San Diego, Buffalo, Newport News, Miami, Atlantic City, 1909-1919. Introduced flying boat to Brazil, Russia, Austria, Italy and Germany, 1913-1914. Designed and built for Rodman Wanamaker, the “America,” the first multicolored flying boat, and first heavier-than-air flying craft designed for transatlantic flight, 1914. With J. N. Willys expanded Curtiss factories to meet war demands of Great Britain, Russia, and the United States, 1917. Developed “Wasp” (holder of world’s records for speed, climb, and altitude) and other types of aeroplanes, flying boat types, and with United States Navy, the Navy-Curtiss flying boats 1, 2, 3 and 4, the latter of which made the first Atlantic crossing, May 16-27, 1919.
