(This book was originally published prior to 1923, and rep...)
This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.

Epistemologist metaphysician Neo-Kantian
Liebmann, Otto was born on February 25, 1840 in Lowenberg, Silesia.
Philosophy, Mathematics and Natural Sciences in Jena, Halle and Leipzig.
He was made professor at Strassburg (1872) and went to Jena in 1882. Having credited Kant"s philosophy (though criticizing it on the vital point of accepting a thing-in-itself), he focuses on what he sees as the shortcomings in the approaches of Kants successors. He frequently ends a section with the statement that one should return to Kant.

Liebmann attacked Fichte, Schelling, Hegel, Schopenhauer and their followers as speculative dogmatists. His motto was ‘Back to Kant’. He believed that the fundamental ideas of Kant’s transcendental philosophy are true, and argued that it is important to understand the spirit of Kant's philosophy in order that we may continue to develop it. Yet he did not follow Kant slavishly. For Liebmann, pure experience was nothing but a prejudice. Experience must be understood as dependent on transcendental conditions. The ‘original fact’ of consciousness forms the basis of any science and its object. Liebmann argued against Darwin that there is a life force. This ‘life force’ is not an a priori concept for him, but a gap in our conceptual framework that ultimately must remain a riddle for us. He understood reason as a product of nature. However, because he saw' reason as a procuct of nature he also thought that there must be something analogous to reason in nature itself. Liebmann’s Kant und die Epigonen (1865) was very important for the origins of the neo-Kantian movement. Wilhelm Windelband called him 'the most faithful of all Kantians’ and "the most outstanding among the thinkers’ of the second half of the nineteenth century. In the late twentieth century he is almost forgotten.
