Giessen and Leipzig Universities.
Professor in Berlin from 1916.
Stammler tried to apply Kant’s critical philosophy to jurisprudence. Influenced by the Marburg School, he advocated a philosophy of right in which the ideal of a community of autonomous historical human beings that are related to one another in one organic whole was central. This 'social ideal’ was for him a task that must be pursued by moral beings. It formed for him the foundation of right law and a society in which the interests of free individuals are realized without negating their autonomy as moral beings. Stammler was highly critical of Marxism and its materialistic view of historical processes. Stammler was one of the most important philosophers of law of the Weimar republic. However, he was influential not only in Germany, but also other European countries and the USA. Max Weber vehemently rejected Stammler’s criticism of Marxism.
