The compelling saga of Father LaForgue, an ambitious 17th-century Jesuit priest, whom is regarded with a combination of warmth and wariness by the natives, who refer to LaForgue and his fellow priests as "black robes". The by-the-book Laforgue does little to endear himself to the Indians-one of whom, a holy man, labels the priest as a demon who will bring nothing but death and destruction. LaForgue journeyed through the frozen Canadian wilderness to save the souls of the Indians and colonize the tribes, or that's what he believes.

Actor director editor producer screenwriter writer cinematographer
Bruce Beresford was born on August 16, 1940, in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia.
Bruce Beresford graduated from Sydney University, where he studied alongside John Bell, Clive James, and Madeleine St John with a Bachelor of Arts in 1964.
Bruce Beresford began making short films as a student at the University of Sydney, where he acted in the drama society. He directed his first films here, including The Devil to Pay and It Droppeth as the Gentle Rain.
Then Bruce spent two years in the mid-sixties in Enugu, Nigeria working as a film editor, and in 1966 he got a post at the British Film Institute Production Board, where he produced short documentaries.
After returning to Australia in 1971, Beresford directed his first feature film, Barry Crocker and Barry Humphries comedy The Adventures of Barry McKenzie (1972). The movie, which Beresford co-scripted with Barry Humphries was popular enough that he directed a sequel, Barry McKenzie Holds His Own (1974). Both films found great commercial success in Beresford's native country and helped to establish their director's reputation. Beresford began attracting international attention in the late 1970s and early '80s. His next collaboration with Humphries, Side by Side (1975), was less successful, but in 1976 Beresford made the comedy Don’s Party, and it earned him an Australian Film Institute award for best director. However, the drama The Getting of Wisdom (1977) and the thriller Money Movers (1978) were less well-received.
Beresford’s breakthrough came with his widely acclaimed Breaker Morant (1980), about the court-martial of Australian soldiers during the Boer War. The movie helped establish the Australian film industry and won a particular amount of acclaim and a number of honors, including the New York Film Critics Circle Award for Best Film in competition at the 1980 Cannes Festival, and also earned him an Academy Award nomination for best-adapted screenplay. It also led to an invitation to direct the Hollywood film Tender Mercies (1983), which was written by Horton Foote and starred Robert Duvall as a faded country music star. For this drama, Beresford received an Oscar nomination for best director. Bruce’s next two films, King David (1985) and The Fringe Dwellers (1986), were misfires, but he was praised for his direction of Crimes of the Heart (1986), the film adaptation of Beth Henley’s play of the same name.
Perhaps Beresford’s biggest success was Driving Miss Daisy (1989), winner of an Academy Award for best picture, although Beresford was not nominated as director, and Golden Globe Awards for Best Motion Picture - Comedy or Musical. The movie starred Morgan Freeman as the African American chauffeur for an elderly Jewish woman, played by Jessica Tandy, and traces their growing appreciation of one another. Mister Johnson (1990), a drama about a Nigerian man who tries to be equal with the British colonial administration, won critical praise but little notice. Other Beresford’s notable films Black Robe (1991), Rich in Love (1992), scored him another critical victory.
The films like Silent Fall (1994), A Good Man in Africa (1994), and the Sharon Stone death row drama Last Dance (1996), proved to be failures.
Beresford later helmed Paradise Road (1997), a World War II drama starring Cate Blanchett, Glenn Close, and Frances McDormand, and Double Jeopardy (1999), a thriller starring Ashley Judd and Tommy Lee Jones. Then Bruce directed The Contract (2006), Mao’s Last Dancer (2009), which was based on the real-life story of a Chinese ballet dancer who defected to the United States, and Peace, Love & Misunderstanding (2011). Beresford’s later credits included the dramedy Mr. Church (2016) and the TV movie Flint (2017), about the contaminated water crisis in Flint, Michigan. Ladies in Black (2018), set in 1950s Sydney, was based on a best-selling novel.
In addition to his film work, Beresford also directed several operas including Girl Of The Golden West (Puccini), Spoleto (Italy), and Elektra (Strauss) and Of Mice and Men for Opera Australia. Immediately prior to starting production on Paradise Road (1997), Beresford directed Sweeney Todd for the Portland Opera in Oregon.

Quotations:
"Some films I've done I've thought were good and some not so good. And there have been films I've done that critics absolutely hated but I've still thought they're good because I've got my own opinion."
"I love working but I'm very particular about what I do. There's an amount of stuff I turn down. That doesn't mean that everything I've done has worked; a lot of it hasn't and I've made mistakes. I just like to make films. It's a lot of fun. It's not like a real job."
“I always think that better directors write the scripts because if you can’t write, and you don’t have anything to say, then what’s the point of making films?”
Bruce Beresford's first marriage was to Rhoisin Patricia Harrison in 1965. They were blessed with two sons and a daughter (Adam Beresford, Benjamin Beresford and Cordelia Beresford) but later divorced. Bruce then married Virginia Duigan, actress and writer in 1985, and they are still together. They have a daughter, Trilby Beresford.
