Entered the army in 1914 and pursued a military career which led to his appointment in 1942 as Major General, his promotion in February 1944 to Lieutenant-General and in August 1944 to Wehrmacht Commander of Greater Paris. Imprisoned by the French, he was soon released and in 1951 published his memoirs Soldat unter Soldaten.

1951While describing the destruction of Poles and Jews as ‘an offence against God’s laws of life’, von Choltitz was no less inclined to put Allied bombing measures against the Germans on the same plane.
