Sebastián Lerdo de Tejada was born in Jaapa in the state of Veracruz on 24 April 1827.
Lerdo got a law degree and served as president of San Ildefonso College during 1852-1853.
He became minister of foreign relations in 1857, a deputy in Congress during 1861-1863. and chief justice of the Supreme Court in 1867. When President Juárez died in office in 1872. Lerdo succeeded to the presidency under the 1857 Constitution. General Porfirio Díaz ousted him from the presidency in 1876. Lerdo lived in exile in New York until his death.
