Álvaro Obregón was born on 19 February 1880 in Alamos in the state of Sonora.
He managed a cigar factory, and then a flour mill. In 1911 he supported the Revolution by becoming mayor of Huatabampo, Sonora’s southern port. In 1912 he formed his own army of 300 Indians, named himself general and supported President Francisco I. Madero. He helped Venustiano Carranza occupy Mexico City in 1914. In 1916 he became minister of war. After Carranza was assassinated in May 1920, Obregon became president on November 30, succeeding Acting President Adolfo de la Huerta.
He pressured his successor. President Plutarco Elias Calles, to get the no-reelection principle taken out of the Constitution, and in 1928 he won a second term. But before he could assume office again he was assassinated by a seminary student seeking to avenge the antichurch policies of Obregon.
