He underwent military training in France and in the Republic of the Congo, served with the French forces in Indochina and Algeria, was promoted from captain to colonel on October I, 1968, and made Chief of the Military Cabinet at the Presidency in charge of National Defence and Veteran Affairs.
Appointed Chief of the General Staff on December 27, 1971, he became Commander-in-Chief of the Chadian Forces on October 2, 1972, in place of the veteran Jacques Doumro, after the French military withdrawal.
