Using an extremely accessible approach, the authors present a fascinating look at how cosmic structures, such as galaxies and clusters, began and evolved. After introducing readers to the simplest cosmological models and basic observational cosmology, they detail the Big Bang theory and the theory of structural formation by gravitational instability. The book concludes with observational techniques for testing models of large-scale structure origin in the universe. Features discussions of recent spectacular breakthroughs including the COBE satellite discoveries.

This is the 2nd edition of a highly successful title on this fascinating and complex subject. Concentrating primarily on the theory behind the origin and the evolution of the universe, and where appropriate relating it to observation, the new features of the this addition include:* An overall introduction to the book * Two new chapters: Gravitational Lensing and Gravitational Waves * Each part has a collection of exercises with solutions to numerical parts at the end of the book * Contains a table of physical constants * The addition of a consolidated bibilography

Coles, Peter was born on June 4, 1963 in Newcastle Upon Tyne, England. Son of Alan C. and Jean (Shaw) Elder.
Master of Arts, Cambridge (England) University, 1985. Doctor of Philosophy, University Sussex, England, 1989.
He did his first degree at Magdalene College, Cambridge, in Natural Sciences, specialising in Theoretical Physics, graduating in 1985. His primary research interest is in cosmology, specifically on theoretical models that try to account for the properties of the observable universe, including the cosmic microwave background. He is the author of a number of books on this and related subjects, including a textbook, "Cosmology: the origin and evolution of cosmic structure" (, co-authored with Francesco Lucchin).
Coles was a professor of Theoretical Astrophysics at Cardiff University from 2007 to 2013.
He previously worked at the University of Nottingham, Queen Mary, University of London, and the University of Sussex. He currently resides in Brighton.
Among the places he has previously lived in are Pontcanna in Cardiff, Beeston in Nottinghamshire and Bethnal Green in London. He is a Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society and of the Institute of Physics.
Peter Coles" blog, written under the anagrammatic pseudonym Telescoper, is among the top five physics blogs listed by the Daily Telegraph.
