After that, from 1969 till 1973 he was a medical superintendent at Veikkola Sanatorium. Since 1975 Claes worked as a physician at Loviisa Mental Health Clinic. Since 1987 Claes Andersson was a Member of Finnish Parliament. In 1988 Claes Andersson was a Member of Espoo City Council. Then, in 1995, he became a Finnish minister of culture, youth, universities, and sciences. Claes Andersson also performs as a jazz pianist.
Claes Andersson began his political career in the left wing of the political spectrum at the end of the 1950s during his clinical studies at a Helsinki hospital. Andersson said that he wanted to understand how societal demands could be so varied for different groups of people.In 1967 he helped found the November movement, which aimed to improve the lives of society's vulnerable population. Andersson became a Member of Parliament for the first time in the 1987 parliamentary elections as a candidate for the Democratic People's League of Finland. Claes Andersson was a member of the SKDL Socialist delegation from 1987 to 1989 and had not previously been a member of the Communist Party. Andersson co-founded the Left Alliance in 1990 and became the party's first chairman. Andersson was a candidate for the Left Alliancein the presidential election in 1994, receiving 3.8% of the vote.
Andersson was married. His wife's name was Maria Kristina Andersson. They had six children. Andersson's daughter Henrika Andersson was famous for being actoress and author and Andersson's son Ville Andersson was a former footballer and diplomat.
