After graduating Omar Hassan Ahmad Al-Bashir served as paratrooper in the Egyptian Army; and in 1973 participated in the War against Israel. After returning to the native land he headed several military actions of the National Islamic Front against Sudan People's Liberation Army, which in 1983 started full-scale military actions to fight for independence of the south regions.
On June 30, 1989 there occurred a military takeover in Sudan and Muslim fundamentalist groups were privy to it. The operation of the provisional constitution of 1985 was stopped, the government was overthrown, and the parliament was dissolved and forbidden any parties or trade unions. The Revolutionary Command Council for National Salvation (RCC) came to power headed by Lieutenant General Omar Hassan Ahmad Al-Bashir, who also took the positions of the Prime Minister and Minister of Defense.
