The present volume replaces, and partially incorporates, two texts which are now out of print in the Library of Jewish Studies published by Behrman House: The Jew in American Society and The Jewish Community in America. While this volume represents something of a departure from the original, in general its organization follows the chapter headings of my book America's Jews, and can therefore be used as a reader in conjunction with that work. Jewish immigration from the colonial period to the 1920s is generally divided into three periods: the Sephardic, the German, and the East European. The division does not always correspond to the actual facts of immigration but rather indicates which group set its cultural stamp upon the Jewish community at a given period. The understandable tendency of present-day American Jews is to endow their immigrant ancestors with a higher status than they actually attained. The religious piety of these ancestors is also frequently exaggerated. The persistent tendency to change the shape of the past to conform with the present needs can be noticed in a variety of different contexts.

How has the Jewish community adapted and met its responsibilities in our rapidly changing American society? How does the community respond to individual Jews, to world Jewry, and society at large? These essays are an authoritative exploration of Jewish communal life, including the informal and formal community, religious movement, education, and inter-group relations. Written by Marshall Sklare, the renowned Professor of American Jewish Studies and Sociology at Brandeis University.
