In Nicklas Lidstrom: The Pursuit of Perfection, the Hall of Fame defenseman and a who's-who of hockey luminaries investigate and reveal precisely how he made dominating the game he loves appear so effortless. How did an unimposing prospect catch the eye of Red Wings scouts during an era when few Swedes made it to the NHL? What was the secret to his remarkable endurance and longevity, allowing him to miss just 44 games in 20 grueling NHL seasons? And what level of preparation and study was required to transform a man who was not the biggest or fastest at his position into one of the greatest defensemen in hockey history?

Nicklas Lidstrom was born on April 28, 1970 in Avesta, Dalarna County, Sweden, as Nicklas Erik Lidstrom.
At the age of 7, Lidstrom started playing street hockey with his friends. The first time he put on skates was at an outdoor rink.
At 17, Nicklas Lidstrom started playing for Vasteras IK in Sweden's second division, and a year later, debuted in the top league (now Swedish Hockey League). Lidstrom caught the attention of Christer Rockstrom, the Wings' top European scout. He pushed the Wings to draft Lidstrom, then 19, in the third round, 53rd overall, at the 1989 draft in Bloomington, Minnesota.
Lidstrom studied electrical engineering and drove a truck during a year's service in the military (he got time off daily to continue his hockey career). He hesitated to join the Wings in 1991 because it meant forgoing the Winter Olympics in France, but second thoughts evaporated as Lidstrom tallied 60 points his rookie year in the NHL. He finished second to Pavel Bure for the 1992 Calder Trophy, awarded to the league's top rookie.
In the 1994-1995 season, he appeared in his first Stanley Cup play-off, but Detroit was defeated by the New Jersey Devils. In 1997 the Red Wings swept the Philadelphia Flyers to win the franchise's first Stanley Cup in 42 years. Lidstrom led all defensemen in points as the Wings repeated as champions in 1998.
The next season he helped Detroit defeat the Carolina Hurricanes for a third Stanley Cup. For his dominating performance in the postseason, he scored 5 goals, including 2 game winners, and made 11 assists. Lidstrom capped the 2002-2003 season with his third consecutive Norris Trophy. In 2006 he recorded his 800th career point, and, after Steve Yzerman retired as captain following the 2005-2006 season, Lidstrom was named to succeed him.
In Lidstrom's first season as team leader, the Wings reached the conference finals but lost to the eventual champions, the Anaheim Ducks. Detroit responded in 2007-2008 by posting the best record in the league en route to the franchise's 11th Stanley Cup. Lidstrom's poise and skill were credited as key to Detroit's success, and he became the first player born and trained in Europe to captain a Stanley Cup-winning team. After the 2011-2012 season, Lidstrom retired, having played 20 seasons with the Wings. His career totals included 264 goals and 878 assists.
The Lidstroms returned to Sweden in 2012 and live in their lakefront home in Avesta. He has kept busy coaching his sons and occasionally scouting for the Wings.
