弘文天皇

statesman emperor

Tennō Go-Komatsu was an Emperor of the early Muromachi period. He was the 100th sovereign of the country.

Background

Tennō Go-Komatsu was born on 1 August 1377. He was the son of Emperor Goen’yu, a ruler of the Northern Court, the line of succession backed by the Muromachi shogunate at the time of the split between the Northern and Southern Courts.

Career

In 1382 he succeeded his father as ruler of the Northern Court, and in 1392, through the mediation of Shogun Ashikaga Yoshimitsu, it was arranged that he should receive from the ruler of the Southern Court, Emperor Gokameyama, the sword, mirror, and jewel, sacred regalia symbolic of the position of emperor.

He w'as thus able to hold a proper coronation ceremony, becoming the one hundredth sovereign. Thus the split between the Northern and Southern Courts, which began when Emperor Godaigo retired to the Yoshino region in the south and a rival ruler, Emperor Komyo, was set up in Kyoto in 1336, was finally brought to an end.
