Richard Paul Edelman was born in 1951 in Long Beach, New York, United States.
Edelman obtained a BFA from the Rochester Institute of Technology (1972) and an MFA from the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn (1979).
Since 1974 he has been doing freelance work as a photographer and photographic conservator. He has held several positions in New York, as a faculty member at the New School for Social Research (1977, 1979), as a producer and coordinator of a lecture series at the Floating Foundation of Photography in New York City (1979) and as an illustrator and consultant for a new series of textbooks put out by the New York Institute of Photography (1977- 79).
Edelman works in 35mm black-and-white also specializes in the presentation of photographic artwork.
He belonged to CAA (1977-79) and has been a member of SPE since 1977.
