Lucas Samaras was born on September 14, 1936, in Kastoria, Greece.
Lucas Samaras received a Bachelor of Arts from Rutgers University, New Brunswick, New Jersey, in 1959. He also attended Stella Adler Theatre Studio in 1960 and studied art history at Columbia University, New York City (1959-1962).
Self-employed as a sculptor and photographer, Lucas Samaras taught at Brooklyn College, New York (1971-1972), and gave an advanced sculpture seminar at Yale University, New Haven, Connecticut, in 1969.
In 1976 Lucas Samaras was commissioned by the General Services Administration to create a large-scale Corten steel sculpture, which is permanently installed at Hale Boggs Federal Courthouse in New Orleans. Beginning in 1969, Lucas Samaras began working with the SX-70 process, manipulating images either with light and his body or with the Polaroid process itself. He generally uses his body, often nude, as a subject and takes his photographs indoors.
Lucas Samaras represented Greece at the 53rd International Art Exhibition, The Venice Biennale (June 7- November 22, 2009) with the multi-installation "PARAXENA" in the Greek Pavilion in the Giardini.
He has been the subject of several portraits by Chuck Close, in media including painting, daguerreotype, and tapestry.
The Catalogue Raisonné of his works is being prepared by the Wildenstein Institute.
