Lucas Samaras was born on September 14, 1936, in Kastoria, Greece.
Lucas Samaras received a Bachelor of Arts from Rutgers University, New Brunswick, New Jersey, in 1959. He also attended Stella Adler Theatre Studio in 1960 and studied art history at Columbia University, New York City (1959-1962).
Self-employed as a sculptor and photographer, Lucas Samaras taught at Brooklyn College, New York (1971-1972), and gave an advanced sculpture seminar at Yale University, New Haven, Connecticut, in 1969.
In 1976 Lucas Samaras was commissioned by the General Services Administration to create a large-scale Corten steel sculpture, which is permanently installed at Hale Boggs Federal Courthouse in New Orleans. He generally uses his body, often nude, as a subject and takes his photographs indoors.

He has been the subject of several portraits by Chuck Close, in media including painting, daguerreotype, and tapestry.
The Catalogue Raisonné of his works is being prepared by the Wildenstein Institute.
