Robert Stiegler received his Bachelor of Science (1960) and Master of Science (1970) in Photography from the IIT Institute of Design.
In 1966, Robert Stiegler took a professorship at the University of Illinois at Chicago. There, he headed the Photography Department, becoming a key figure in establishing the program that exists today. Stiegler taught at the university until his death in 1990. In addition to his photography, he has made a number of films, including Full Circle (1968), Licht Spiel (1966), and Capitulation (1965).
Robert William Stiegler studied with Aaron Siskind, Harry Callahan, Fredrick Sommer and Arthur Siegel.
