In 1949 he was arrested and like hundreds of thousands of other Baltic republics citizens, he was captured by the MGB and sent to Soviet labour camp in Karaganda. In 1957 Ülo went to Moscow, and began intensive practice as non-conformist artist. 1966: Poland, XIX Festiwal Sztuk Płastycznych, Sopot – Poznań: Biura wystaw artystycznych.
After 1956 Nikita Khrushchev February «Secret Speech», he has denounced Stalinism, Ülo Sooster was released from the labour camp and returned to Estonia.
