Garvie attended Woodbridge School and subsequently the University of Kent and the University of Sheffield. He received his Bachelor degree in History and Doctor of Philosophy degree in Economic and Social History.

Prior to taking up role at Sony, Garvie was Managing Director of International Production at All3Media between January 2011 and May 2012, and Managing Director of British Broadcasting Corporation Worldwide Content and Production between January 2006 and September 2010. During this time he was responsible for overseeing the content and production division, leading the international production and format business for the corporation"s commercial arm. Garvie was responsible for developing Strictly Come Dancing, and the popular United States version Dancing With The Stars.
In addition to this, he also helped set up new United Kingdom producers such as Left Bank Pictures and Cliffhanger, and has invested in existing companies such as Baby Cow, Big Talk, Clerkenwell and Hardy Pictures.
Garvie left the British Broadcasting Corporation after more than a decade. He joined the corporation as British Broadcasting Corporation Manchester head of entertainment and features from Granada in 1998.
Three years later he became the London-based head of the British Broadcasting Corporation entertainment group. Strictly Come Dancing
