He served in the First Maine Cavalry of the United States Army from 1863 to 1865. He served as assistant United States Attorney for the District of Maine from 1881 to 1885. He was confirmed by the Senate on January 27, 1891 and received his commission the following day.
He served on the board until his death and was succeeded by Roy Chamberlain.
Lunt died on May 28, 1908, in New York City.
On January 21, 1891, President Harrison nominated Lunt to serve as a Member of the Board of General Appraisers, to the seat vacated by Joseph Lewis Stackpole.
