Takenoshin Nakai was born on the 9th of November, 1882 in Gifu, Japan.
In 1927 Takenoshin Nakai became an instructor, then an assistant professor and professor at Tokyo University. He was concurrently director of the botanical gardens attached to the university. During World War II, he was director of the Bogor Botanical Gardens in Java. After the war, he was appointed director of the National Museum of Science in Tokyo. He wrote more than 500 theses and some books on botanical subjects. In 1919 and 1930 he published papers on the plants of Japan and of Korea, including the genus Cephalotaxus.
