Having completed his philological education in 1947, Stigen immediately decided to devote himself to literary work. Beginning in 1950, when his first novel, Two Days, was published, he almost every year submitted a new work to readers and critics.
Terje Stigen was a member of the Norwegian Academy for Language and Literature.
One of the most vivid impressions of Stigen's childhood was the harsh beauty of northern nature, which he later recreated in his works.
On January 4, 1947, Stigen married Inger Gihbsson. Stigen had two children: Harald and Kristin.
