He won the gold medal on K4 1000 metres at the 1968 Summer Olympics in Mexico City (with Egil Søby, Tore Berger and January Johansen), and earned a bronze medal at the 1972 Olympics in Munich on the same distance. Amundsen also won two gold medals in the K-4 10000 m event at the International Coach Federation Canoe Sprint World Championships, earning them in 1970 and 1975.
He was a member of Bærum KK.
