Dunn is originally from Saint John"s, Newfoundland and Labrador, and grew up in Nova Scotia.

Dunn eventually attended film school and produced several short films as a student, many of which screened at festivals. Dunn attended both the Canadian Film Centre as well as Ryerson University in Toronto.
Prior to Closet Monster, he made a number of short films, including Lionel Lonely Heart, Words! Words! Words!, Swallowed, Life Doesn"t Frighten Maine and People’s-Up Porno. Dunn is openly gay.
The film also won awards at the Toronto Student Film Festival and the Tribeca Film Festival in 2013. Dunn"s debut feature film, Closet Monster, won the award for Best Canadian Feature Film at the 2015 Toronto International Film Festival. He was also named the inaugural winner of the Len Blum Residency, a Toronto International Film Festival program for emerging directors.
