He was educated at Eton College and the Royal Military College at Sandhurst.
He was a Colonel of the 81st regiment from 1831 to 1839, afterwards he was the Military Secretary at Gibraltar. In 1816, he entered the Scots Guard, and afterward commanded the 81st Regiment. He was military secretary at Gibraltar.
In 1846, he retired from the army as a Colonel of the 13th Light Dragoons.
