Price Thomas was born in Abercarn and educated at Caterham School and the University College of South Wales During the First World War he served with the Royal Army Medical Corps in Gallipoli, Macedonia and Palestine. After a period of study at Westminster Hospital Medical School he qualified in 1921 and in time held all residential appointments there. His Times obituary noted that despite his huge fame and international reputation "the more honours that befell him, the more did his inate modesty came to the fore".
