He is the son of legendary Tennessee Lady Vols basketball coach Pat Summitt. Summitt was born September 21, 1990 to Rifle Brigade Summitt II and Patricia Summitt.

In high school, he earned the title of Scholar-Athlete of the Year during his senior year and was given the "Spartan Award" as a point-guard at the Webb School of Knoxville. He went on to play basketball at the University of Tennessee for two seasons, playing a total of nine minutes in six games and making his only shot attempt, a three-pointer. Summitt served as assistant coach to Terri Mitchell at Marquette University, overseeing the team"s offense, prior to being hired as head coach of University"s Lady Techsters on April 1, 2014.
On April 1, 2014, announced Tyler Summitt as the sixth head coach in Lady Techster basketball history.
