(This book was originally published prior to 1923, and rep...)
This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.

Excerpt from Our World's Great Benefactors: Short Biographies of the Men and Women Most Eminent in Philanthropy, Patriotism, Art, Literature, Discovery, Science, Invention To bring within the limits of a modest volume an abstract and brief chronicle of the world's progress since the introduction of the art of printing, has been the controlling motive in the production of "Our Great Benefactors." While in no sense is it considered exhaustive of the subject, the privilege of selection has been used in as discriminative a manner as seemed needful to this general survey, and to the distinct purpose also of embodying within the several groups of eminent personages contributing to it such only as have an undisputed claim to be classed for all time among the benefactors of the race. This design has eliminated from the work all strictly military heroes or persons of merely local renown. The biographical articles are the joint production of many writers, who have aimed to tell briefly, clearly, and fairly what has been achieved for mankind by the individual benefactor, the scope or limitations of his mind or work, his habits of thought or training, or the specific causes leading up to the result accomplished. This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1873 Excerpt: ...the withdrawal of his army without loss from Boston, by making the safety of the town a guaranty of his own. His after career in America was measurably successful; defeating Washington at Long Island and White Plains, he took possession of New York, while the battles of Brandywine and Germantown gave him Philadelphia. He was relieved by his old comrade Sir H. Clinton, and returned home in 1778, when an official inquiry was made into his conduct. Howe's address to his troops before the battle of Bunker Hill is a soldierly document. "Gentlemen,--I am very happy in having the honor of commanding so fine a body of men; I do not in the least doubt that you will behave like Englishmen, and as becometh good soldiers. "If the enemy will not come from their intrenchments, we must drive them out, at all events, otherwise the town of Boston will be set on fire by them. "I shall not desire one of you to go a step further than where I go myself at your head. "Remember, gentlemen, we have no recourse to any resources if we lose Boston, but to go on board our ships, which will be very disagreeable to us all." There is every reason to believe Sir William's military duties did not prevent his exercising a generous hospitality. The hall of audience has no doubt resounded with mirth and music when the general received. There were his royalist neighbors, the Mascarenes, Harrison Gray, the Boutineaus and Master Lovell, with many kindred spirits of the court party. There were Clinton, Burgoyne, the noble Percy, and many more of the army and navy to grace the levees of their commander by their presence. The buzz of conversation ceases as Sir William leads out some beautiful tory for the stately minuet, an example speedily followed by his guests. Perhaps a...

(Excerpt from Old Landmarks and Historic Personages of Bos...)
Excerpt from Old Landmarks and Historic Personages of Boston The author has had a twofold object in presenting this work for the acceptance of the public. Besides the preservation of the old landmarks, now so rapidly disappearing before the era of improvement, there is a very general desire to know where the actors lived who have given Boston such prominence in the history of our country. The plan has been adopted, in viewing old localities, to tell for what they have been famous, and to briefly characterize or give some conspicuous traits and public services of the personages mentioned. In view of the limits prescribed for this volume it has been found necessary to condense from the abundant material in the author's possession, but it is believed the more important features have been given. While the numerous local publications have been carefully examined, the author has in all cases preferred original authorities in the work of compilation, and has endeavored to give credit where it is due. The beaten track has been avoided as far as possible, and preference given to such topics as have either escaped mention altogether, or received but little notice from former writers. In a work so largely statistical it would be a surprise if errors did not exist, but unwearied pains have been taken to avoid them and to render the work as free from this objection as possible. The suma mit of this hill, like almost every other in town, is capped with green stone, ground off smooth at the top 3 thus sustaining the theory of the geologists that, during what they denominate the drift period, vast mountains of ice passed over our country, and in their steady progress, with their enormous weight, composed as they are thought to be of rocks of all kinds which they. Have accumulated in their grand march, ground off the tops of rocks over which they passed. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. (Excerpt from A Book of New England Legends and Folk Lore:...)
Excerpt from A Book of New England Legends and Folk Lore: In Prose and Poetry The recovery of many scattered legendary waifs that not only have a really important bearing upon the early history of our country, but that also shed much light upon the spirit of its ancient laws and upon the domestic lives of its people, has seemed to me a laudable undertaking. This purpose has now taken form in the following collection of New-England Legends. As in a majority of instances these tales go far beyond the time when the interior was settled, they naturally cluster about the seaboard; and it would scarcely be overstepping the limit separating exaggeration from truth to say that every league of the New-England coast has its story or its legend. Disowned in an age of scepticism, there was once - and the time is not so far remote - no part of the body politic over which what we now vaguely term the legendary did not exercise the strongest influence; so that, far from being merely a record of amusing fables, these tales, which are largely founded on fact, disclose the secret spring by which society was moved and history made. One looks beneath every mechanical contrivance for the true origin of power. That is to assume that the beliefs of a people are the key to its social and political movements, and that history, taken in its broadest sense, cannot be truly written without having regard to such beliefs. Had the conviction that witches existed not been universal, public sentiment would never have countenanced the executions that took place in New England. (The California Gold Rush really was a bonanza. Between 18...)
The California Gold Rush really was a bonanza. Between 1849 and 1855 more than $400 million dollars was gathered by the miners; once adjusted, it is a sum today reaching into the trillions. It was a social phenomenon marked by the carnivalesque. In his work Roughing It (1872) Mark Twain’s protagonist remarks as his brother heads West, “Pretty soon he would be hundreds and hundreds of miles away on the great plains and deserts, and among the mountains of the Far West, and would see buffaloes and Indians, and prairie dogs, an antelopes, and have all kinds of adventures, and may be get hanged or scalped, and have ever such a fine time, and write home and tell us all about it, and be a hero…And by and by he would become very rich, and return home by sea, and be able to talk as calmly about San Francisco and ocean, and ‘the isthmus’ as if it was nothing of any consequence to have seen those marvels face to face.” Go they did to the Land of Golden Dreams, in the largest internal migration in American history, and the adventures and tragedies have created a large and memorable literature. The Young Vigilantes tells a story of life on ship and land, centered around California during the Gold Rush.

(Seldom, in the annals of war, has a single campaign witne...)
Seldom, in the annals of war, has a single campaign witnessed such a remarkable series of reverses as did that which began at Boston in March, 1776, and ended at Morristown in January, 1777. Only by successive defeats did our home-made generals and our rustic soldiery learn their costly lesson that war is not a game of chance, or mere masses of men an army. Though costly, this sort of discipline, this education, gradually led to a closer equality between the combatants, as year after year they faced and fought each other. When the lesson was well learned our generals began to win battles, and our soldiers to fight with a confidence altogether new to them. In vain do we look for any other explanation of the sudden stiffening up of the backbone of the Revolutionary army, or of the equally sudden restoration of an apparently dead and buried cause after even its most devoted followers8 had given up all as lost. As with expiring breath that little band of hunted fugitives, miserable remnant of an army of 30,000 men, turning suddenly upon its victorious pursuers, dealt it blow after blow, the sun which seemed setting in darkness, again rose with new splendor upon the fortunes of these infant States.

(Excerpt from General Israel Putnam: The Commander at Bunk...)
Excerpt from General Israel Putnam: The Commander at Bunker Hill The writer did not purpose to renew the old controversy as to the officer entitled to be considered first in command at the battle of Bunker Hill; at the same time, he did not mean to be silent, if the subject should again become one of discussion. In the brief sketch which precedes the narratives of British officers present at the battle, he felt that he could not appropriately enter upon the question of command, for the reason assigned, and because a simple declaration, if unsupported by argument or authority, would count for nothing more than an expression of opinion. The subject having been revived in the interest of Colonel Prescott as the commander in the battle, and the writer having seen that after this long silence the claim of Colonel Prescott was urged as if there were really no longer any question of his title, nor a claimant who might successfully dispute it, he now feels the time to have arrived to enter his emphatic protest against both assumptions. There is a wide difference between the command of a particular post on a battle-field, to which an officer is assigned by the order of a superior, and the command of a field of battle which embraces other positions of perhaps equal importance. (Leopold Classic Library is delighted to publish this clas...)
Leopold Classic Library is delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive collection. As part of our on-going commitment to delivering value to the reader, we have also provided you with a link to a website, where you may download a digital version of this work for free. Many of the books in our collection have been out of print for decades, and therefore have not been accessible to the general public. Whilst the books in this collection have not been hand curated, an aim of our publishing program is to facilitate rapid access to this vast reservoir of literature. As a result of this book being first published many decades ago, it may have occasional imperfections. These imperfections may include poor picture quality, blurred or missing text. While some of these imperfections may have appeared in the original work, others may have resulted from the scanning process that has been applied. However, our view is that this is a significant literary work, which deserves to be brought back into print after many decades. While some publishers have applied optical character recognition (OCR), this approach has its own drawbacks, which include formatting errors, misspelt words, or the presence of inappropriate characters. Our philosophy has been guided by a desire to provide the reader with an experience that is as close as possible to ownership of the original work. We hope that you will enjoy this wonderful classic book, and that the occasional imperfection that it might contain will not detract from the experience.

(From the book's Preface: One end which I proposed to myse...)
From the book's Preface: One end which I proposed to myself in this book, besides presenting house and home historically, was to gather up as many distinct types of the colonial architecture of New England as possible, from the rude farmhouse of the first settlers to the elegant mansion of a later generation, as it seems to me nothing could give half so clear a picture of a century and a half of colonial life. It was this idea alone which could give cohesion to a series of sketches having little connection in themselves, except as recording fragments of history that had become scattered with the lapse of time. Most of them were written some years ago for Appletori's Journal ; but by the addition of several new subjects, besides re-writing the old ones, the collection bears out, I think, the idea conveyed by the title of OUR COLONIAL HOMES. Contents: - The Hancock Mansion, Boston, Mass. - The Home of Paul Revere, Boston, Mass. - The Governor Cradock House, Medford, Mass. - Hobgoblin Hall, Medford, Mass. - Edward Everett's Birthplace, Dorchester, Mass. - The Minot Homestead, Dorchester, Mass. - The Quincy Mansion, Quincy, Mass. - Birthplaces of the Two Presidents Adams, Quincy, Mass. - The Adams Mansion, Quincy, Mass. - The Old Ship, Hingham, Mass. - The Old Witch House, Salem, Mass. - The Collins House, Danvers, Mass. - Birthplace of General Israel Putnam, Danvers, Mass. - The Last Residence of James Otis, Andover, Mass. - The Red Horse (Wayside Inn), Sunbury, Mass. - The Pepperells of Kittery Point - The Early Home of John Howard Payne, East Hampton, L.I. - The Old Indian House, Deerfield, Mass. - The Old Gothic House, Raynham, Mass. - The Old Stone House, Guilford, Conn
