(Chinese version of the A bhinishkramana Sutra ,1 done int...)
Chinese version of the A bhinishkramana Sutra ,1 done into that lan guage by Djnanakuta, aB uddhist priest from North I ndia, who resided inC hina during the Tsui dynasty, i. e., about the end of the sixth century, A.D. It would seem from a consideration of the title of the seventeenth chapter, Leaving the palace for a religious life ,that originally the story of the A bhinishkramana 2was simply that of Buddha sflight from his palace to become an ascetic. A fterwards, the same title was applied to the complete legend (as in the present work), which includes his previous and subsequent history. A very valuable date, later than which we cannot place the origin of the story, may be derived from the colophon at the end of the last chapter of the book. It is there stated that the A bhinishkramana Sutra is called by the school of theD harmaguptas Fo-penhing-king; by theS arvastivadas it is called Ta-chwang1 Wassilief (B ouddhisme, 114). 2B urnout ,L otus, p. 333, has an instructive note on this word. The expression used in the Chinese perfectly confirms his criticism; Shi-kung chuh-J cia, leaving the palace to become a recluse ,is the title of the chapter in question. (Typographical errors above are due to OCR software and don't occur in the book.) Samuel Beal was born in Davenport, near Stockport, Cheshire and graduated from Trinity College, Cambridge in 1847.
After serving as curate at Brooke in Norfolk and Sopley in Hampshire, he applied for the office of naval chaplain, and was appointed to His Majesty’s Ship Sybille during the China War of 1856-1858.
He was ordained deacon in 1851, and priest in the following year. In 1857, he printed for private circulation a pamphlet showing that the Tycoon of Yedo (ie Tokugawa Shogun of Edo), with whom foreigners had made treaties, was not the real Emperor of Japan. He retired from the navy in 1877.
In 1877, he was appointed professor of Chinese at University College.
