Following his studies, Knight began importing French wine to the United States, and in 1942 took part in organizing the United States landing in Algeria. Knight served as United States ambassador to several countries, and later served as president of the American Club of Paris (1984–1989). Knight died in Inxent, France, at the age of 90.
