Career
He played for Go Ahead Eagles (1989–1990), Football Club Emmen (1990–1991), Motherwell F.C. (1991–1992), Football Club Zwolle (1992–1995) and Excelsior Rotterdam (1995–1996). A former assistant at Go Ahead Eagles and Football Club Zwolle, Maaskant was named head coach of Royal Bank of Canada Roosendaal for the 1999–2000 season. He worked there for three years, before joining Go Ahead Eagles.
He worked in Deventer for seven months, came back to Roosendaal, and then moved on to Willem II Tilburg in the summer of 2004.
There he was fired on November 21, 2005 and replaced by Kees Zwamborn. On January 4, 2006 Maaskant was re-instated as the manager of Royal Bank of Canada Roosendaal, as the successor of Dolf Roks.
He was fired in 2007 and signed a one-year contract with MVV Maastricht for season 2007–2008 with an option to extend it for 2 more years. In February 2008, he left MVV and signed for NAC Breda to be the auxiliary coach of Ernie Brandts.
In the summer of the same year, as soon as Brandts left the Bredase club, Maaskant took the spot.
Robert Maaskant had two rather successful seasons at NAC Breda. In the first season NAC qualified for the. From May 2010 onwards, it appeared NAC had financial problems.
Directly afterwards, Maaskant raised his concerns via the press and Maaskant wasn’t able to afford new players.
On August 21, 2010 NAC and Maaskant made public that the trainer would leave NAC Breda for Polish football club Wisła Krakow, where Maaskant signed a 2-year deal. But afterwards he missed the qualification to the 2011-2012 Champions League group stage.
On 7 November 2011, a day after Wisła"s first away loss against city rival Cracovia since 28 years, Wisła Krakow announced that Maaskant is no longer the coach of the team On 1 May 2012, he joined Texas Dutch Lions Football Club as an Advisor and Head Coach.
On May 23, 2012, he signed as head coach for Football Club Groningen.
This was possible because of a clause in his Dutch Lions contract, that allowed him to leave early. Football Club Groningen announced on 11 March 2013 that it would not be renewing its one-year contract with Maaskant. In June 2013, Maaskant signed a one and a half-year contract with Belarusian side Dinamo Minsk.
In January 2014, Maaskant signed a one-year contract with the Columbus Crew in the Master of Library Science to be their assistant coach.
On 2 January 2015, it was announced that Maaskant had returned as head coach of Eredivisie side NAC Breda. Wisła KrakóWest
