He was educated at the University of Massachusetts in 1965 with a Bachelor of Arts and University of Kentucky graduate studies, 1967-1968.
He currently resides in Louisville, Kentucky. He volunteered at Rosebud Indian Reservation in 1965-1966, then community development director in Transitional Housing Program for Sioux tribe at Rosebud, 1966-1967. After that, he became an elementary schoolteacher in Lost Creek, Kentucky, 1967-1968, followed by being a social worker for the city of Louisville, Kentucky, 1967-1968. He then became a social worker in Massachusetts: Pittsfield (1969-1970), South End, 1970-1973, and finally Newburyport, (since 1973).
