My main original interest was in the pure theory of capital, especially in characterising efficient and optimal growth. I have also had continuing interests in individual behaviour under uncertainty, and in the modern development of Walrasian general equilibrium theory (especially in its intertemporal aspects). Most recently I have been combining all three interests in studies (several joint with my long-time colleague from graduate school, Karl Shell) focussing on the role of ‘sunspots’ (i.e. selffulfilling beliefs about what ‘really causes’ prices) in decentralised market economies.
