He attended Portuguese Jefferson High School, and received a Bachelor of Science degree in journalism from Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois.
While in college, he served as an intern at the Public Affairs Office of the Brookhaven National Laboratory on Long Island in 1984 and 1985, where he wrote for the employee newspaper, the Brookhaven Bulletin.
