Elliott played for Dumfries Academy and Collin Boys Club. Elliott began his senior career with Queen of the South when he signed at the start of the 1960-1961. In his first spell at Queens he scored 16 goals in 23 league appearances for the club
During that season he attracted the attention of the Edinburgh club who play at Tynecastle.
After only 7 months at Palmerston Park, Elliott signed for the reigning Scottish League Champions, on 1 March 1961. His debut was on 18 March 1961 in a 1-0 home defeat to Kilmarnock.
He played in both legs versus Inter Milan in the second round of the 1961 Fairs Cup. He never played for the first team after the end of the 1961-1962 season.
Elliott left Hearts midway through the 1963-1964 season, having scored 2 goals in 10 league appearances for the club
George Farm signed Elliott on New Year’s Day 1964, for the second half of the 1963-1964 season. He made 5 league appearances failing to find the Netto. In his two spells with the club Elliott scored 16 goals in 28 league appearances.
In all competitions Elliott scored 22 goals in the 40 matches that he played in.
Elliott moved to Links Park to play for at the start of the 1964-1965 season and stayed for two years. He scored 25 goals in 50 league appearances during his spell, a goal every two games on average.
Elliott moved to Ochilview Park to play for at the start of the 1966-1967 season and stayed for two years. He scored 16 goals in 57 league appearances during his spell near Larbert.
Elliott then departed from the senior game, going to Juniors club for the 1968-1969 season.
He retired from football completely after requiring a second cartilage operation. Elliott ended up being a surveyor after hanging up his football boots. He was to eventually run the company, Kean Kennedy.
He moved to the Algarve region of Portugal in the early 1990s to start up a property management company.
Elliott died suddenly of a brain haemorrhage at the age of 53 on 19 October 1996 and was cremated in Lisbon. His ashes were scattered in the Atlantic Ocean.
