Background
He was a son of Julius Sabbe and the eldest of seven children.

He studied philosophy and literature at the University of Ghent.
In 1903, he became a teacher in Mechelen. As from 1907 he also taught at the theatre class of the Royal Flemish Academy of Antwerp. In 1919 he became Director of the Plantin-Moretus Museum in Antwerp and as from 1923 he became professor at the Universite Libre de Bruxelles.
He was buried at the Schoonselhof Cemetery in Antwerp.
A statue of the writer was revealed in 1950, and stands at the Sashuis near the Minnewater in Bruges.
