Michael Patrick Gbinije is a Nigerian-American basketball player for the Syracuse Orange.
Education
Gbinje competed foreign As a junior, Gbinije averaged 18.0 points and 6.0 rebounds per game. He averaged 25.0 points, 10.0 rebounds and 5.0 assists as a senior and was named first team all-state.
He led Benedictine to a 26-5 record and the VISAA Division I State Championship. Gbinije was ranked 28th in the 2011 class by ESPNU 100and 26th overall by Scout.com.
Career
Born in Hartford, Connecticut he played basketball for Benedictine High School in Richmond, Virginia. After his graduation from high school, he played for one season for Duke before transferring to Syracuse. Gbinije has represented Nigeria at the international level
Gbinije began his collegiate career at Duke, where he played sparingly and averaged 1.7 points, 0.8 rebounds, and 0.2 assists as a freshman.
He opted to transfer to Syracuse after his freshman year and sat out the 2012-2013 season. As a sophomore, Gbinije averaged 3.4 points, 1.8 rebounds, and 1.2 assists per game.
He increased those numbers to 12.7 points, 5.0 rebounds, and 3.6 assists per game as a junior (2014-2015). On February 14, 2015, he scored a career high 27 points against Duke to go along with four assists in an 80-72 loss.
In the 2015-2016 season, Gbinije"s senior year, he has averaged 19.7 points per game so far, through Syracuse"s first nine games.
His season-high in points so far came against Charlotte on November 25, when he scored 26 points on 9-of-11 shooting (6-of-8 three point shooting), helping his team to a 83-70 victory. Gbinije competed on the Nigeria squad in AfroBasket 2015 because his father, Frank, is a native of Nigeria.
"Playing on this team was a unique experience for me," he said.
"Overall, I enjoyed playing with these guys." Overall, Gbinje averaged 7.3 points and 2.1 rebounds per game in the tournament and scored in double figures twice in eight games.
