(Through Blossfeldt's lens, plants and flowers become gorg...)
Through Blossfeldt's lens, plants and flowers become gorgeous formal gestures Working with a homemade camera, Blossfeldt gathered and photographed his own plant samples, magnifying them by up to 45 times. From around 1898 onward, he shot some 6,000 images, which he used primarily as visual aids in his classes. Masterworks presents a remarkable collection of Blossfeldt’s strikingly austere yet poetic portraits of plants, which capture their timeless beauty in intimate detail.

Photographer professor sculptor
Karl Blossfeldt was born on June 13, 1865 Schielo, Harzgerode, Germany.
Among his students at the Berlin Arts and Crafts School was Heinz Warneke. From 1924, Karl Blossfeldt was professor at the Vereinigte Staatsschulen für freie und angewandete Kunst (United State School for Fine and Applied Art) in Berlin. With his meticulously produced studies of plant life, Professor Blossfeldt was attempting to prove his thesis that, though nature and art are widely differentiated in vital respects, the original forms of all art are to be found in nature. His enlarged images of the forms assumed by plants, buds, sprouts, leaves, stalks are offered as evidence.
