From 1927 to 1955 he was curator of the Botanische Staatssammlung München. As a taxonomist, he classified many plants within the family Amaranthaceae. The botanical genera Suessenguthia (family Acanthaceae) and Suessenguthiella (family Molluginaceae) commemorate his name.
