After setting the career scoring record at Central State University and leading his team to an National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics championship, he played in the National Basketball Association, the American Bar Association, the EPBL, and the EBA. The EPBL and EBA both later became the Continental Basketball Association. Wilburn joined the National Basketball Association"s Chicago Bulls in November 1967 to provide reinforcement after the team had lost several players to injuries. He returned to the team for the 1968-1969 season, but was waived in November 1968.
