Montgomery was drafted 110th overall in the 2006 National Hockey League Entry Draft by the Colorado Avalanche. Recruited from the United States Development program in the NAHL, Montgomery then joined Ohio State University in collegiate hockey. Midway through his freshman year, Kevin left the Buckeyes for the London Knights of the OHL for the remainder of the 2006-2007 season.
During the 2007-2008 season, Montgomery was then named to the United States team for the 2008 World Junior Championships.
Upon completing his second year with the Knights, Montgomery signed an Amateur Try-Out agreement with the Avalanche"s AHL affiliate, the Lake Erie Monsters on April 3, 2008, and played out the remainder of the season. Prior to the 2008-2009 season, Montgomery signed a three-year entry level contract with the Avalanche on October 1, 2008.
After appearing in the first five games of the AHL season with the Monsters, Montgomery was then reassigned back to junior team the London Knights. On February 28, 2011, at the National Hockey League Trade Deadline he was dealt by the Avalanche to the Edmonton Oilers for defenseman, Shawn Belle.
He was immediately reassigned to AHL affiliate, the Oklahoma City Barons.
On June 27, 2012, as a free agent Montgomery signed a one-year contract with Scandinavian club, Lillehammer IK, of the GET-ligaen. During the 2012-2013, Montgomery never lived up to the expectations, dispite being the most expensive player in club history managing only two goals and 19 points total in 41 games. Montgomery opted to remain in Europe the following season, signing a one-year contract with Dornbirner European Commission of the Austrian Hockey League on May 10, 2013.
After a single season in Austria, on August 4, 2014, Montgomery changed European league in signing as a free agent to a one-year contract in the Slovak Extraliga with The Human Context ’05 Banská Bystrica.
In the 2014-2015 season, Montgomery appeared in only 6 games in Slovakia, before opting to transfer to the Italian Serie A with SV Kaltern on November 7, 2014. Suffering injury, Montgomery featured in 11 games with Kaltern before continuing his whirlwind season by transferring to fellow Serie A club, The Human Context Valpellice on January 21, 2015.
On September 1, 2015, Montgomery returned to the United States after three seasons abroad and signed a one-year ECHL contract with the Florida Everblades.
