Born in Edmond, Oklahoma, Tway is the son of Bob Tway, an eight-time winner on the Professional Golf Association Tour, including the Professional Golf Association Championship in 1986.

He was a first-team American Junior Golf Association All-American in 2006 and was a second-team pick in 2005. Tway played college golf at Oklahoma State. Tway qualified for the 2008 United States. Open at Torrey Pines but he failed to make the cut by four strokes after posting rounds of 75 and 78.

Tway turned professional in 2011 after graduating from Oklahoma State. He made his professional debut at the 2011 Travelers Championship, with his father caddying for him.
Both had shot a tournament record 261 (–23). He finished fifth on the 2013 Web.com Tour regular season money list to earn his 2014 Professional Golf Association Tour card.
