MacDonald played youth football for Motherwell and spent two years with Clyde before joining Hamilton Academical in June 2014. He later spoke about his transfer, stating he was looking forward to the challenge of playing at a higher level He moved on loan to Dumbarton in August 2014.
On 31 August 2015, MacDonald was released by Hamilton.
He signed for East Fife in October 2015, with the contract running until January 2016, at which point he was signed by Scottish League One side Airdrieonians on a short term deal.
