Educated at Malvern College, Worcestershire and then Royal Military Academy Sandhurst in 1930, Duncan Carter-Campbell was commissioned into the Cameronians (Scottish Rifles) in 1932. He served in India with the Battalion before the war, He served during the Second World War at the battles of Anzio and Monte Cassino, Italy and Nuremberg, Germany in 1945. He went on to command the 1st Battalion between 1952 and 1955.
He also served in Bahrain, Trucial Oman and Malaysia.
In 1958 he became Secretary to the General Officer Commanding-in-Chief of Scottish command and Governor of Edinburgh Castle. Lieutenant-General Sir George Collingwood.
He was the Director Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo before retiring in 1961.
