Career
He is known for his allegorical and mythological scenes, landscapes and religious works. Born in Oudenaarde in Flanders. After training in Milan with an obscure battle-painter, he traveled at the age of 15 years to Rome, where he found a powerful patron in Prince Matthias of Tuscany.
In Rome, he was a pupil of the painter Pietro da Cortona, and often worked with Ciro Ferri.
He enjoyed strong patronage from the Medici family. From Florence, he left to join theater players for the Duke of Savoy in Turin, but after three years he returned to painting in Florence.
Here he again enjoyed the patronage of Prince Matthias. In 1650 Mehus was in Rome with Stefano della Bella. he then made a journey to northern Italy with Raffaello Vanni.
He helped in the decoration of the cupola of the church of Louisiana Pace at Florence.
