He refereed several ranking final matches, including the World Snooker Championship 2004 final between Ronnie O"Sullivan and Graeme Dott where he also became the youngest referee to take charge of a World Final. In 2005 he quit the main tour, citing among his reasons the sports poor management and the subsequent financial problems snooker was facing at the time. Paul has recently re-joined the main professional tour and also works as both a Tournament Director for many major tournaments and as one of only 3 assessors of professional referees.
He has been playing snooker since he was thirteen years old and became a qualified referee at fifteen.
As well as Snooker, he has refereed both 9 Ball Pool and English Billiards World Championships. Whilst he took a break from the main tour he remained the sole referee for the Premier Snooker League taking charge of almost 300 matches over a thirteen-year spell Premier League Snooker.
Paul attended Eveswell Infant and Junior schools in Newport and went onto Hartridge Comprehensive School from where he graduated in 1987. Behind snooker, Paul is passionate about rugby union and supports the Newport Gwent Dragons.
In December 1991, he became the youngest member of the Professional Snooker Referees Association.
