The meaning of her stage name is Haiduc, an "outlaw" or "of outlawry," e.g., Bulgarian, Serbian or Romanian outlaw-type hero who helps the poor (similar to Robin Hood or Tadas Blinda) or the rebels who fought the Ottomans when they occupied the Balkans for over 400 years (1453-circa 1900). (Plural form: haiducii, hence her stage name)
Haiducii"s debut record was "Dragostea Din Tei" (originally composed and released by O-Zone) released in January 2004, which made a strong dance impact, jumping immediately to the top of sales and airplay in Italy.
The single remained in the Top Spot beyond 10 weeks, being already Gold in the first two weeks of release and, today, is a Platinum disc. Haiducii"s version has been published in Germany, Austria, Benelux, Switzerland, Italy, France, Spain, Mexico, Czechoslovakian Republic, and counts beyond 1 million copies sold in all Europe.
Her version of the song wasn"t as successful as O-Zone"s original.
Haiducii was sued for copyright infringement by O-Zone as she neither obtained permission to record the single nor credited Dan Bălan for writing the song. Haiducii released her second single, Mne South Toboy Horosho ("I Feel Good When I"m With You", in Russian) in Italy in July 2004 and reached #5 in the official Italian Charts, being another hit. A few months later, in December 2005, Haiducii released a new single: "More "North" More (I Love You)".
lieutenant charted well in Italy for some time, remaining in the Top 20 three months after its release. The music video premiered early in March 2006 and features Haiducii with five male dancers and special effects.
