(Mark Twain once famously said "there was but one solitary...)
Mark Twain once famously said "there was but one solitary thing about the past worth remembering, and that was the fact that it is past and can't be restored." Well, over recent years, The British Library, working with Microsoft has embarked on an ambitious programme to digitise its collection of 19th century books. There are now 65,000 titles available (that's an incredible 25 million pages) of material ranging from works by famous names such as Dickens, Trollope and Hardy as well as many forgotten literary gems , all of which can now be printed on demand and purchased right here on Amazon. Further information on The British Library and its digitisation programme can be found on The British Library website.

This position will appear clearly exemplified by the ancient I rish writings, which I now have the honor of laying before the Academy in their original form, accompanied with close English translations. This collection principally consists of deeds and instruments relating to property, and almost entirely belongs to that part of I reland, anciently called Tuath-M umhain, (T homond or North Munster. This great territory, which was formerly under the dominion of the powerful family ofO Brien, extended from the I sles of A ran, on the western coast of the kingdom, to Sliabh Eibline near Cashel in the present county of Tipperary, thence to Carran-F earaidh or Cnoc-A ine in the present county of Limerickj and from Lcim-na-con or Loopshead to Sliabh-D ala in Ossory. Part of this tract of country was erected into a county, in the year 1585, by Sir John Perrott, Lord Deputy of I reland, and received the name Clare, in commemoration of the A nglo-N orman Earl,-f To William Dix, Esq. an eminent Solicitor of this city, I am indebted for many of these documents. William Shaw Mason, Esq., author of the Statistical Survey of I reland, kindly furnished me with a few from his valuable MS. collection. The remainder were in my own possession. It has been suggested that many of a similar nature might be discovered in the library of Trinity College, Dublin, if carefully explored. f Byinquisition taken at Castlebank in the County of Clare, on the 23d of A ugust, 1637, it was found, that Edward I. by letters patent dated 26th January, 1275, granted the whole land of Thoraond to Thomas De Clare, and the heirs male of his body lawfully begotten, who died thereof seized at Bunratty in 1287 ;that said land descended to Gilbert De Clare his son and heir, who having died without issue, it descended to Richard De Clare his brother, who having died in 1317, the land of Tliomond, for want (Typographical errors above are due to OCR software and don't occur in the book.)

Hardiman was born in Westport, County Mayo, in the west of Ireland around 1782.
The university library now bears his name. Hardiman is best remembered for his History of the Town and County of Galway (1820) and Irish Minstrelsy (1831), one of the first published collections of Irish poetry and songs. His father owned a small estate in County Mayo.
He was trained as a lawyer and became sub-commissioner of public records in Dublin Castle.
In 1855, shortly after its foundation, Hardiman became librarian of Queen"s College, Galway. The university library was later named in his honour.
